The hardest episode of the War of Succession in Cardona took place during the siege of 1711. The stronghold of the Castle of Cardona, under the command of Manuel Desvalls of Vergós, survived the Bourbon attack. The Sant Vicenç church served as a hospital.

On 11th September 1714, Barcelona fell to the Bourbon troops. The fortress of the Castle of Cardona was the only one which remained undefeated. Yet the Duke of Berwick imposed its capitulation in order to pledge that the citizens of Barcelona would be safe from harm. This capitulation was signed seven days later, on 18th September.

The 18 de Setembre cultural association of Cardona commemorates these historical events of 18th September yearly by means of historical re-enactments in the Sant Vicenç Church.
